You can come to my showroom for that. ’ with music and a cool backdrop and great girls having a good time. ” Soon, Sui developed a reputation in the fashion industry as one of its most fun, hip, and original designers. An InStyle article once described her in the following way: If we were lucky enough to have five more of her in the fashion industry, the clothing business would be a lot more fun.

That gave me the confidence to do my first runway show in 1991,” Sui recalled in InStyle. A runway show would be a way to introduce her clothing line more emphatically to New York and the rest of the industry. With her usual determination, Sui got to work. Success! Sui focused on putting on her first runway show. The problem was that she needed money to hire models and to pay other expenses—and she had none. Again, her friends came through for her. Meisel had introduced her to several top “supermodels,” like Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, and Naomi Campbell, all of whom loved her clothing and designs.

Meisel had attended the High School of Art and Design, which was founded in 1936 in New York City and is considered a premier academic institution for talented teenagers who want to pursue the arts as a career. By then, Meisel was sure that design was in his future, and he had demonstrated a keen insight into and innovative perspective on the art scene. He and Sui became good friends, spending a lot of time together and learning from each other. What they also had in common was that school had become boring to them.
