This wasted valuable time because his soldiers were needed on the front line. At the same time, Wayne and Sullivan made a large dent in the British defense. The British were retreating, and the Americans were close to victory. But it was extremely foggy that night, and an American brigade commanded by General Adam Stephen became confused in the fog. When the brigade saw some of Anthony’s troops, they fired. The confusion spread through the entire American army. At this point, Washington had no choice but to retreat.

But the cabins had no floors, and wind blew through the spaces between the logs. There were no beds and very few blankets. The soldiers often had no meat or bread for many days.
